For a durable protection of horticultural crops

Our research focuses on the bacterial, fungal and viral diseases affecting fruit and vegetable crops  grown in the Mediterranean Basin. We study the biology and evolution of these microbial pathogens as well as their interactions with host plants, the environment and agricultural practices, to understand better the epidemiological processes and to propose the most suitable control methods with low inputs and no negative impact on the environment or human health.

Our research contributes to the development of early and efficient diagnostic tools, of methods for epidemiological surveillance and evaluation of the risks of emergence of novel diseases, and of durable management strategies of crop varietal resistance and biocontrol agents.

Our research unit comprises about forty permanent staff as well as young interns. The activities of the two research teams (Mistral, Virologie) rely on a platform (PROPHYLE) including an Experimental Facilities division for greenhouse, climate chamber and field trials, as well as a workshop for equipment maintenance and development, a Microscopy division including electron and confocal microscopes and an Etiology division, on a regional molecular biology platform and on a number of specialized laboratories (microbiology, serology, etc.).
