Building epidemiological surveillance and prophylaxis with observations both near and distant

  • Project: The goal of BEYOND is to go beyond the current paradigm of epidemiosurveillance (ES) to create a new paradigm of ES by i) rationally integrating the plethora of potential indicators from smart sensors, social networks, digital maps and remotely-sensed imagery into epidemiological models and then make them accessible for epidemiologists, ii) educating epidemiologists to incorporate new indicators into their reasoning when elucidating key epidemiological processes that can be leveraged to protect plant health, and iii) creating tools to accompany farmers and other stakeholders in decision making relevant to a new age of ES information and to the goal of broadening their options – beyond pesticides – of ways to manage plant health. These ES strategies will be the foundation of future “enhanced” ES.
    • We will achieve BEYOND’s goal by uniting researchers across multiple disciplines in life sciences, mathematics, computer science, social science and economics in the development and comparative analysis of enhanced ES for about 15 pathogen systems that represent a range of crop types (fruit trees, vegetables, wine grapes), of pathogen types (fungi, bacteria, viruses), of significance of risk and quarantine status, and of the role of insect vectors and exchanges of plant material in disease transmission.
    • BEYOND consists of 7 work packages to (1) Develop a strategy to identify the most informative and accessible predictors of plant health across several space/time horizons, and create guidelines for exploiting and deploying new predictors for ES to broaden the scope of prophylaxis, (2) Elaborate a library of eclectic data informing pathogen presence and dissemination at medium to large scales to be used for extrapolation and prediction; (3-4) Adapt network analysis and machine learning to find novel indicators and sampling strategies for ES across several horizons of space and time; (5) Elucidate the processes of stakeholder decision related to disease management strategies in face of information about phenomena beyond the farm and single seasons, in a situations of scientific uncertainty, with the likelihood of risk aversion and irreversibility in public investments for ES; (6) For specific pathogens, conceive strategies of enhanced ES, evaluate the impact of these ES strategies on broadening options for, and efficiency of, prophylaxis, and summarize their case histories to highlight marked differences with classical approaches to ES; (7) Train young researchers and create teaching materials and forums to transfer knowledge about enhanced ES to the scientific community, to stakeholders, to students and the public.
