VIRTIGATION - HORIZON project - 2021-2025

Emerging viral diseases in tomatoes and cucurbits: implementation of mitigation strategies for durable management

  • Project: Tomatoes and cucurbits (melon, courgette, cucumber, etc.) are among the most widely produced fruit and vegetables in the world. Mediterranean crops are under increasing threat from emerging viral diseases caused by begomoviruses (in particular tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci or tobacco whitefly) and tobamoviruses (in particular tomato brown rugose fruit transmitted by seed and contact). Due to their rapid transmission in the field and in glasshouses, these viral diseases are difficult to eradicate and can lead to the total loss of crops in affected areas. To date, there are only few biological solutions available to limit the damage caused by these viruses.
    The aim of VIRTIGATION is to develop control strategies for sustainable management of these diseases, in particular by evaluating sources of resistance, integrated pest management and biopesticides against viral vectors or premunition. VIRTIGATION adopts a bottom-up, multi-stakekeholder approach to adapt its innovative solutions to the needs of the agricultural sector, through close collaboration between stakeholders from several countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom), such as farmers, agricultural advisers, public research centres and the seed and plant protection industries.L’objectif de VIRTIGATION est de développer des stratégies de lutte pour une gestion durable de ces maladies notamment par l’évaluation de sources de résistance, la lutte intégrée (IPM) et les biopesticides contre les vecteurs viraux ou la prémunition. VIRTIGATION adopte une approche ascendante et multi-acteurs pour adapter ses solutions innovantes aux besoins des filières agricoles par une étroite collaboration entre des parties prenantes issues de plusieurs pays (Allemagne, Belgique, Espagne, France, Israël, Italie, Pays-Bas, Royaume-Uni), telles que les agriculteurs, les conseillers agricoles, les centres de recherche publics et les industries semencières et phytopharmaceutiques.
